The PARADE Project

The PARADE Project focuses on Parents’ and Adolescents’ Reports of African Americans’ Daily Experiences. The project examines how place and culture shape the links between parenting and youth behaviors in African American families and how different aspects of daily life are linked to adjustment. Parents and adolescents complete daily surveys using smartphones as part of this project.

The PLACES/LUGARES Project

The Places/Lugares project is a study that examines how place (i.e., inside and outside of the residential neighborhood) and culture impact parental monitoring (as well as other parenting behaviors) as well as shape the link between parenting practices and youth behaviors among Latino families. All aspects of the project are provided in English or Spanish. PLACES/LUGARES is a collaborative project with Dr. Mayra Bámaca and her IMPACT lab.

The PLACES LUGARES Project

Understanding Families, Adolescents, and Neighborhoods in Context (FAN-C) & Latino FAN-C Projects

The FAN-C and Latino FAN-C projects primarily focused on how context, particularly neighborhood, is associated with adolescents’ well-being and family functioning (i.e., parenting). These projects used the multi-informant (i.e., parent and adolescent) and multi-method (i.e., focus groups and self-report data from questionnaires) design to provide a holistic understanding of the complex influence of neighborhoods on adolescents’ development (e.g., racial and academic attitudes and behaviors as well as parenting strategies associated with living in particular neighborhoods). Some of the goals of these projects were to (1) elicit both parents’ and adolescents’ perspectives about the importance of the neighborhood context in development (2) identify profiles of neighborhood resources, relationships, and norms, (3) highlight positive aspects of neighborhoods, which may be used as possible future intervention targets, and (4) uncover important dimensions of neighborhoods that may not have been studied that are important for parenting and adolescent outcomes, particularly as these dimensions are associated with racial and academic attitudes and behaviors.
